There is no specific scandal on which this column has reported longer – in honour of a promise to my friend Laurens van der Post, before he died in 1996 – than the persecution of the Kalahari Bushmen by the Botswanan government.
Since that year, the Botswanan authorities have – with the full support of the British Foreign Office – been trying to force the last Bushmen out of the Central Kalahari Game Reserve, a vast area of arid wilderness designated by Britain in 1961 to give a permanent home to the few remaining descendants of the original inhabitants of southern Africa.
In 2002, when Botswana began expelling the Bushmen in earnest, in order to imprison them in a vile settlement at New Xade (known to the Bushmen as “the place of death”), one of the government’s nastiest tactics was to cap the borehole on which the Bushmen depended for most of their water.
In 2006, after the longest, most expensive court action in the country’s history, the Botswanan Supreme Court ruled that the Bushmen had an inalienable right to live undisturbed in the reserve, including the right to water.
The government’s response was to maintain its persecution of the Bushmen, forbidding them to enter their homeland without a permit and continuing to deny them access to water. Even supplies smuggled in from outside were seized.
