Often, horse breeders take the mares to another farm to breed thoroughbred horses.
Stories relacionadasEl worldthe smallest horse in the mysterious death of 21 horses died Why horses? But scientists say the Czech Republic when they return to their regular precincts begin to have sex with horses from the herd to hide authorship Colt.
When that is not possible in many cases the mares abort the baby.
This sexual behavior may be an evolutionary response of horses to avoid the risk of infanticide, whichis observed in many species, or when the males kill the colts in their struggle for dominance in the herd.
Scientists say this may explain the high level of pregnancy loss in horses.
The study was led by Ludek Bartos Institute for the Study of Animal Science of the Czech Republic, and was published in the journal Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology.
According to research, a third of the mares that were bred to horse stables other than their own lost their babies.
“None of the horses that were paired with the same stable aborted,” said Bartos. And the mares that were completely separated from the horses in his stable and therefore not found ways to hide the paternity of their offspring, were more likely to abort.
According to experts, “avoiding the loss of energy in producing offspring that are subject to infanticide.”
Paternity Testing
The idea that domesticated horses could adopt this strategy came from a study of infanticide in zebras.
To avoid inbreeding in these animals in captivity, many zoos introduce an exemplary way in the pack. But Professor Bartos team found that this practice increases the likelihood of losing the pregnancy.
Previous research conducted by him showed that most of the babies were aborted.
“If a male is introduced into the herd shortly after the female was pregnant, the probability that the horse survived was less than 5%,” he said.
“The survival rate increased to 60% if the horse was over the first month after birth.”
Bartos said that zebras and domesticated horses have similar strategies to abort.
For him, the horses probably “take the decision” to terminate the pregnancy.
Chemically induced abortion is a phenomenon well known in zoology.
It is known as “Bruce effect” and has been studied mainly in rodents, in which the smell of urine from a male leads to abort females.
Although the mechanism behind this high rate of abortions in horses is not known with precision, Professor Bartos noted that the study has a practical message for horse breeders.
“The practice of transporting mares to mate with a horse at another barn and then returns to its usual place next to his pack male samples is inadequate.”
“It’s very possible that this is one of the main causes of the high percentage of termination of pregnancies in horses”, he added.
